Something like 3500 students participated in my son’s graduation ceremonies at San Francisco State University’s football stadium yesterday. All of them, I think, had cell phones. So did their parents.
There was a major event happening all afternoon where students and parents would phone each other and play the “can you find me in the crowd” game.” Also, everyone seemed to be talking on their cell phones so loudly that you couldn’t hear the speakers (those little dots at the front of the stadium).
Ah… technology. Changing the nature of our lives once again, and not in a particularly thoughtful way. So many people seemed to experience the ceremony in an isolated way–connected to a phone– rather than experience it as an academic community coming together to celebrate the accomplishments of the students and the institution.
Very weird… and a little sad. But hey, my son graduated and that was terrific!
