Apple Comes Under New Patent Challenge

Well, here we go again. I guess it is just a simple matter of when you’re the big dog, other dogs want your bone. It is no secret that Apple’s iPod has captured a huge amount of the mp3 player market (54%), so it appears that another company is trying to patent a part of their invention–this time, the navigation approach. This follows close on the heels to the Microsoft patent on parts of the iPod click wheel. It just sounds a bit like using legal means to steal intellectual property to me; but then, I don’t pretend to know much about the details of the case. Here’s an article on what looks like the latest corporate iPod rip-off.

Norm, Melanie and Daniel Lepage

Many regular patrons of this blog will know Norm Lepage–he graduated from our program in the spring. You may not know that Norm became a father this summer, and I wanted to pass along the word that his new son, Daniel, could use some help. This is an email I received from Melanie Lepage today, and I pass it along to you in case you’d like to help. You can reach Norm at nlepage AT sasktel.net.

Subject: Daniel’s heart

Hello everyone,

As most of you know, Daniel was born with a heart defect which needs surgery. Since there is no children’s hospital is Saskatchewan, we have to go to Edmonton for approximately a 10 day stay. Thanks to some friends and family, there is a fundraiser supper Thursday, September 15th to help us with the cost. It will be at 5:15pm at the Odeon and the meal is Greek with souvlaki, salad and Greek potatoes. You can get tickets from us, Rachelle Lepage or John Salmon. They are $15. We do not know when surgery will be but we are on a waiting list and hope it will happen sometime in October. We find ourselves in such a strange position of needing help. Please do not feel you must come, we just knew that you would want to know about Daniel and how he is doing.

If you would like to know more about Daniel’s heart condition there is some information below as well as attached pictures of a normal heart and a heart with the same defect that Daniel has.

Daniel was born with a congenital heart defect called an AV canal defect. This is a hole in the septum which is the wall between the left and right ventricles. Along with a hole, there is usually a problem with one or more of the valves. This is the most common heart defect in babies and 40% of all Down syndrome babies have this defect just as Daniel has.

What does this mean? Well for Daniel, it means he must have open-heart surgery. They will put him on a heart and lung maching and stop the heart. He has two holes in the septum which basically makes one large hole. They will patch the hole with bovine (cow) tissue which will grow with him He also has one valve which is leaking slightly. They will fix it as best the can. So far he is not bothered by the defect.

We pray every day the he remains healthy until surgery. Thank you so much for all of your support and friendship. It means so much to Norm, Daniel and I.

Gratefully,

Melanie
