Social Presence in the Web-Based Synchronous Secondary Classroom

The purpose of this study was to explore how social presence manifests itself in the web-based synchronous secondary classroom. Data were gathered using structured and semi-structured observation of classes and semi-structured interviews of teachers who work in the synchronous secondary classrooms of NL, Canada.

Findings revealed that social presence was manifested through several categories of a revised instrument for identifying social presence. Social presence manifested itself for students through the use of text-based Direct Messaging and for teachers through use of two-way audio. Students relied on the conventions of communication of informal synchronous chat to manifest social presence.

Woodworking Show

If you’re a woodie, this is usually a great show.

From Earl Misanchuk:

The Saskatchewan Woodworkers’ Guild is currently hosting its annual show of woodworking at the Galleria Building, Innovation Place, until Sunday, June 4.

Show times are 11 am to 9 pm daily, except Sunday, when it closes at 4 pm. There are more than 290 pieces made by Guild members (I’m not one of those 290 this year), plus more than 100 more made by junior and senior high school students.

Admission is free, but donations to help defray the cost of the show are most welcome.

At closing time Sunday, there will be a draw for 10 door prizes made by Guild members. You need not be in attendance at that time to win, but you must, of course, enter (for free).
