The Open Learning Division of Thompson Rivers University (TRU-OL) ( is one of Canada’s leading distance education providers. Thompson Rivers University, Open Learning (TRU-OL) delivers over 400 individual courses and 57 programs to more than 10,000 students studying at a distance on an annual basis, from across Canada and around the world.

The Open Learning Division of Thompson Rivers University (TRU-OL) invites applications for the ongoing, full-time position of Director, Instructional Design. Located in Kamloops, British Columbia (, the Director, Instructional Design is responsible and accountable for: setting the design direction and standards for all Open Learning (OL) courses; assigning, prioritizing and overseeing the work of the OL Instructional Designers and Media staff; and managing the OL Innovations Lab. The Director is required to keep abreast of, and contribute to, best practices in instructional design and curriculum development for open, distance and online education and for ensuring that Thompson Rivers University – Open Learning (TRU-OL) follows these best practices. In addition, the Director, Instructional Design is responsible for: hiring, mentoring and managing all Instructional Design and Media staff; hiring Subject Matter Experts; and providing course development training to existing tutors.


➢ Graduate degree in education, doctorate preferred (focus on curriculum development, educational technology, distance learning)
➢ Minimum of 10 years of instructional design experience with at least five years managing curriculum development departments or teams
➢ Current knowledge and experience in instructional design for open, distance and online education
➢ Experience with emerging technologies for learning and their incorporation into open and distributed learning environments in innovative and sustainable ways
➢ Experience with, and knowledge of, rapid media development
➢ Demonstrated leadership skills
➢ Strong organizational and management skills
➢ Collaboration and team skills, including an ability to effect change through a collaborative approach
➢ Critical thinking, analytical and problem-solving skills
